A THREE-BED property that overlooks a 12th century castle that featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail has gone on the market for £260,000.

The semi-detached house in Carmarthenshire offers stunning views of Kidwelly Castle which was the setting of the opening scene to the 1975 British comedy film.

The movie begins with Arthur, played by Graham Chapman, with his trusty servant Patsy, played by Terry Gilliam, arriving at the castle to ask knights to join them at Camelot.

Arthur then embarks in a hilarious and bizarre conversation with a man at the top of the castle after arriving while hitting coconuts together and pretending to ride a horse.

As well as featuring in the movie, Kidwelly Castle is also awash in non-fictitious history.

In 1231 Llywelyn the Great and his Welsh army captured and razed the castle.

In the early 1400’s Welsh independence leader Owain Glynd?r and his soldiers from France and Brittany captured Kidwelly town and unsuccessfully attempted to take the castle.

The countryside surrounding the castle and the property is said to be haunted by the headless ghost of Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd.

Gruffydd was beheaded in 1136 and was the wife of Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Rhys.

The property for sale boasts many character features and is split across three floors.

There are two double bedrooms and one single which are split across two floors.

A beautiful brick fireplace is shown in the kitchen while the living room offers unparalleled views across the castle walls and turrets across a small river.

West Wales Properties, who are managing the sale of the property, listed the property on the market last week for offers in excess of £260,000.

They said: “A fantastic opportunity to purchase a truly unique property located in the popular town of Kidwelly.

“Situated over three floors, the house offers versatile living accommodation, with spectacular views over Kidwelly Castle.

“The property could be used as one home, or divided into separate units, subject to the relevant planning and building regulations.

“Entering the house you walk into a lovely light entrance hall which showcases the beautiful curved character staircase, the current owner has actually held art exhibitions in this space.

“On this floor there is a living room with a window overlooking the generous garden and a bedroom.

“On the lower level of the property there is a kitchen/dining room with double doors that lead into the garden, bedroom, bathroom and lounge.

“To the top floor of the property there is another reception room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen diner, which has fantastic views out onto Kidwelly Castle.

“The house also had a new roof fitted in May 2021.”

Monty Python and the Holy Grail was created by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.

The cult classic movie grossed more than any other UK film shown in the US that year.
