Teuida passes 5m downloads as speaking-first language learning gains momentum

by Amina
in Press Release

South Korea’s language-learning startup Teuida has surpassed 5m downloads worldwide, marking a notable moment for a company that has built its reputation around a “speaking-first” approach rather than the memorisation-heavy methods common in digital language apps. The milestone comes as Teuida expands beyond Korean into Japanese and Spanish, positioning itself within a growing market for more conversational, confidence-driven learning tools.

Teuida’s premise is straightforward: many learners struggle not with grammar, but with the hesitation that comes with speaking a new language aloud. To address this, the platform uses interactive simulations in which users practise short, scenario-based conversations with native speakers. The sessions—ordering food, navigating everyday interactions, or making small talk—aim to replicate the early, often uncomfortable moments of real-life communication.

Rather than focusing on vocabulary drills or passive listening, Teuida’s learning loop encourages users to respond verbally, receive immediate feedback and gradually complete full conversations. The company argues this experiential model helps learners internalise expressions and speech patterns more effectively than traditional rote learning.

The approach appears to resonate with global users. Teuida reports a 280% year-on-year increase in revenue, which the company attributes to rising demand for practical, confidence-building language practice. Its newly added Japanese and Spanish courses follow the same structure: short, conversational lessons supported by native-speaker video content and a narrative progression designed to keep learners engaged.

While Teuida’s growth is noteworthy, it also reflects a broader trend within the language-learning sector. As the market becomes increasingly crowded—ranging from Duolingo’s gamified ecosystem to AI-powered tutoring apps—platforms are seeking differentiation through pedagogy and user experience rather than content volume alone. Teuida’s focus on reducing the psychological barrier to speaking positions it within a niche that is gaining traction, particularly among adult learners who prioritise real-world utility over textbook accuracy.

“Teuida’s mission is to provide the experience of speaking a new language and to boost learners’ confidence,” said CEO Ji Woong Jang. “As we expand into new languages, we remain committed to delivering authentic, interactive simulations that meet the needs of modern learners.”

The company says it is now investing in enhanced interactive technologies, expanding its course library and developing a more personalised learning system. With a clear pedagogical stance and a user base that continues to scale internationally, Teuida is emerging as a notable player in the global edtech landscape—albeit one that will face increasing competition as conversational AI tools continue to evolve.
