A SCOTS building firm surprised a local lad with a four year apprenticeship after he impressed the company during his work experience.

Riley Fraser, 16, was rewarded after helping the team to build the Net Zero Home for the Energy Training Academy in Dalkeith, Midlothian, during his time with the firm.

The Garage Conversion Company, which was founded in 2022, offered Riley the new role at its newly-opened base at The Wisp, Edinburgh.

Four pupils from CastleBrae Community Campus were initally chosen to work on the Net Zero Home project, but Riley quickly stood out from the rest.

Managing director, Derek Welsh said: “Riley stood out as someone with real potential with his attitude, skill set and customer care.

“He didn’t know he was being offered the apprenticeship until it was announced at the opening of the Net Zero Home.

“It’s a great chance for him to learn the trade, get a head start in life and I have every confidence he’ll do well and we’re looking forward to supporting his growth and development.”

The new apprentice said that he is grateful for the new opportunity and hopes more spaces will be made available in the future.

Riley said: “Working on the Net Zero Home was a brilliant experience.

“I can’t thank Derek enough for this opportunity and I’m determined to repay the faith he has shown in me.

“Everyone has been really helpful and is always willing to give advice when I ask for it.

Mr Welsh has said that Riley won’t be the last apprentice at the firm, as the company wants to “keep giving youngsters a chance as we continue to grow.”

Riley hopes to work closely with other local high schools in the future and help to close the widening skills gap in the sector.
