Dundee universities face off for sporting supremacy

by Glasgow Report

STUDENTS from Abertay University and the University of Dundee (UoD) battled for the Tay Varsity Challenge Trophy last Wednesday, in a city-wide event.

UoD reigned victorious at the biggest amatuer sporting event in the city’s calendar. This year marks it’s 15th year running.

The sporting events were held in facilities across the city, and included football, rugby, hockey, basketball, netball, swimming, archery, tennis, badminton, pool, golf and many more.

Crowds of spectators gathered to watch the tennis, archery and swimming at the UoD’s Institute of Sport and Exercise (ISE), while others flocked to the Riverside Playing Fields to enjoy the rugby, football and hockey matches.

Dundee University hockey player Hannah Ritchie, 19, who studies fine art said: “The rivalry was quite intense. Everyone was trying their best, but it was good fun.

“Abertay only has one hockey team so they don’t usually play in our league [2nd women’s]. It was nice to play with friends and people we know in other teams.”

Her teammate Maia Gillespie, 20, a dentistry student added: “It’s great to see everyone come together.

“We’ve watched lots of different sports but the women’s hockey has been the best. There was a great turnout and lots of cheers.”

Other sports took place across the city with pool matches in the Shotz Pool and Snooker Dundee, athletics in the Regional Performance Centre, and badminton and volleyball in the ISE. Golf also took place at Scotscraig Golf Club, in Tayport, Fife.

The day ended with a highly anticpated final game of basketball, and crowds were entertained by dance and cheerleading performances and an award ceremony.

Friends from Abertay University, forensic science student Kirsty Sutherland and sports science student Nancy Campbell, both 20, enjoyed a range of events including football.

Kirsty said: “We came to support our team, our uni and to watch our friends. It’s a great atmosphere.”

Nancy added: “We were at the netball too. Everyone is really up for it and enjoys the game, no matter who wins.”

Abertay University won the women’s football, men’s 2nd basketball and men’s 2nd football, while the UoD won the rest of the matches.
