Celtic fans offered cheeky chance to own European Cup kit

by Glasgow Report
in Sports

CELTIC supporters have been offered a tongue-in-cheek chance to own a piece of history after a Scots footy fan listed a “match-worn European Cup final” kit for sale.

The anonymous Hoops fan took to social media to share a snap of the “shirt” they had for sale yesterday, describing it as belonging to former captain Billy McNeil.

The Scottish defender led the Celtic Park outfit to their greatest ever night in 1967 when they defeated Italian side Inter 2-0 in Lisbon, Portugal.

However, the green and white shirt now being offered for sale 57 years on doesn’t quite boast the history that it’s claimed to.

An image of the shirt shows that it does bear a striking resemblance to the simple green and white hooped jersey worn by the Lisbon Lions.

Jock Stein’s side had no sponsorships on the shirt, unlike the modern day where Celtic’s hoops are paired with the manufacturer’s logo and a betting sponsor.

However, the resemblance ends there as a closer look at the tag hanging from the neckline shows it is in fact a Primark number.

Made for children from 24-36 months, the shirt might not be legitimate, but it could certainly be a cheap wardrobe staple for any young Celtic fans.

The image was shared to social media yesterday evening with the lighthearted caption: “Open to serious offers. Billy McNeil match worn European Cup final shirt from 1967.”

The post received over 1,500 likes with dozens of comments from football fans who were quick to offer their views on the shirt.

One joked: “Certificate of authenticity with it?”

Another added: “Is it signed?”

A third wrote: “Says on the certificate of authenticity at the neck there that it’s 24 to 36 months old, is this not Jota’s from the cup final?”

Another quipped: “Can I do Klarna?”

A fifth responded: “We’re laughing now but when Adidas release this as next year’s kit as a ‘playful update’ will we still see those same smiles?”

Celtic face Livingston on Easter Sunday as the run-in for the Scottish Premiership title begins between themselves and rivals Rangers.
