A BIOMANUFACTURING company has been awarded a considerable grant from Innovate UK in partnership with Edinburgh University.

Edinburgh-based Green Bioactives (GBL) was presented with the £224,000 cash injection to develop a biomanufacturing platform for plant metabolites used in personal care products.

Metabolites are naturally occurring chemical compounds often used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food products and typically require resource-intensive extraction.

GBL will use the grant to focus on extracting the plant material in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way, making products that are more accessible for customers.

Dr. David McElroy, CEO of GBL, said: “We are honoured to receive this prestigious grant from Innovate UK.

“This funding will be instrumental in advancing our research and development efforts, allowing us to create a truly innovative biomanufacturing platform.

“Our goal is to transform the way high-value plant metabolites are produced, making the process more sustainable and efficient.

“We are excited about the potential impact this project will have on various industries and the environment.”

The grant comes as part of Innovate UK’s Engineering Biology Collaborative Research and Development programme, created to support projects that use biological engineering for product creation and development.

Innovate UK is a British agency that funds creativity across a range of sectors throughout the country.
