UK Solar Industry Rife with Risk: SolarAdvice.co.uk Urges Consumers to Vet Installers More Carefully

by Amina
in Press Release

With record numbers of UK households turning to solar energy in a bid to cut electricity bills and reduce their carbon footprint, SolarAdvice.co.uk is issuing a stark warning: not all solar installers are created equal, and failing to vet them properly could leave consumers out of pocket and out of options.

While the UK solar industry is booming, it is also littered with a troubling history of bankruptcies, liquidations, and fly-by-night operators. Many homeowners have been left with faulty systems, invalid warranties, or no aftercare when companies fold.

“Consumers are lured by low installation prices and fast installation promises,” said Kian Milroy, spokesperson for SolarAdvice.co.uk.

“But when these companies go bust – as many do – their customers are left with no technical support, no servicing, and no way to claim on their warranty.”

A Pattern of Collapse in the Solar Sector

Over the past decade, several high-profile solar companies have gone into administration, taking thousands of consumer warranties with them.

In many cases, homeowners were sold long-term warranties that became worthless overnight. Some firms also failed to honour workmanship guarantees or provide access to replacement parts.

Despite more regulation and higher demand, the problem hasn’t gone away. With increased competition and margin pressure, some newer firms are undercutting on price while cutting corners on service, support, and financial stability.

SolarAdvice.co.uk: How to Protect Yourself

In response to growing concern, SolarAdvice.co.uk is urging consumers to take a more cautious, research-led approach before signing up with any solar installer. Among their recommendations:

  • Choose companies backed by consumer protection schemes such as the HIES Consumer Code, which offers deposit protection, insurance-backed guarantees, and dispute resolution.
  • Avoid firms demanding full payment upfront, especially without clear documentation of protection.
  • Check the company’s financial health and trading history, not just reviews.
  • Ask about workmanship warranties and who honours them if the installer ceases trading.

“Reputable installers will be transparent, offer protection, and won’t pressure you into quick decisions,” added Milroy.

“Solar can be a brilliant long-term investment – but only if you choose the right partner.”
