Edinburgh could receive a public disc golf course as the sport continues to grow in popularity

NEXT week, the council will decide on whether to go ahead with an 11-hole disc golf course in Hailes Quarry Park.

Disc golf uses frisbees instead of traditional golf balls, with players throwing the discs into nets along the course.

If approved, the course will be installed and maintained by the Edinburgh Disc Golf Community (EDGC).

The sport is growing in popularity in the UK, with Glasgow already having public courses in four of its parks.

The EDGC was founded in 2023 on the back of the success of the Glasgow Disc Golf Club (GDGC) which began six years earlier.

The group organises a number of disc golfing events, and recently participated in a team championships for charity organised by Reboot Disc Golf in Dunbar.

The Dunbar course at Bluebell Woods is the only one in the Edinburgh/Lothians area, and costs a fee of £8 to enter or £15 if you need to rent a disc.

The EDGC is therefore asking for the installation of a disc golf course at Hailes Quarry Park, which it can install and maintain itself.

The sport involves metal nets or baskets which are fixed to the ground, with players throwing from a designated tee area and continuing from where their previous throw landed.

The proposed course has 11 holes and would be open to all and free to access.

Talks between the EDGC and the City of Edinburgh Council have already taken place, with Hailes Quarry Park chosen as the preferred location after the investigation of a range of possible sites across the city.

Earlier this year, Dr Scott Arthur MP for Edinburgh South West attended a mini-gala with EDGC at the park, where he discussed the plans with the group.

A consultation was carried out with community groups such as Friends of Hailes Quarry Park and Longstone Community Council, and the plans must also be agreed to by the Scottish Disc Golf Association.

The installation will be decided on next Thursday at the council’s Culture and Communities Committee meeting.
