Team Scotland’s teenage weightlifter vying for Commonwealth Games success

TEAM SCOTLAND has a teenage weightlifter who will compete in the Commonwealth Games before her first day of university.

Maddie Rosher, 19, switched to weightlifting as teenager and has seen a remarkable rise up the rankings.

She began by doing cross-fit at 14, before deciding that she “didn’t have the lungs for it”.

She said: “I found weightlifting, and I really loved watching, and it just kind of went from there.”

Maddie, from the Borders town of Duns, deferred her entry into the University of Edinburgh until this summer after finishing school.

Her decision was made with the Commonwealth Games as the sole focus.

Maddie said: “When I finished school, I decided that I wanted to kind of put my all into going to the Games.

“That was a big goal for me, and I thought by taking a year off uni, putting everything into it, I can say I did everything that I did to try and get there.

“I did, so obviously it paid off, but that was the big goal.”

With the 2026 Games taking place in Glasgow, Rosher says she is “excited” of having the home crowd behind her during her lifts.

She said: “I’m just really looking forward to it. Everyone will be shouting and, in weightlifting, hearing people before you left a big, heavy weight is really motivating.

“It pushes your adrenaline up as well, so it will definitely be super exciting, and I’ll be really proud to be representing Scotland at home games.”
