Two housing applications for 900 homes in Edinburgh green belt receive over 1,000 objections from locals

TWO housing applications in the Edinburgh green belt have been recommended for refusal by city council planning officers.

Plans for the housing proposals will be reviewed by councillors next week before a final decision on the applications is made.

The two applications propose 900 homes be built on an area of the green belt between Mortonhall and Edinburgh Airport.

However, the plans have garnered over 1,000 objections from unimpressed locals, with the proposals now unlikely to pass with the land also being protected.

Proposed by two different developers, the plans would see 500 houses built by Wheatley Homes East and a further 400 houses built by Barratt & David Wilson Homes.

The developers originally argued that building on the protected land is justified due to the housing crisis in the capital.

The City of Edinburgh Council declared a housing emergency in November of 2023 becoming the first council in Scotland to do so.

Their declaration was followed by the Scottish Government just six months later declaring a housing emergency across the country.

Councillors will review the proposals and the recommendations by planning officers next week, where they will come to a final decision on the possible 900 properties.
