A PERSON has suffered “life-changing injuries” after being hit by a train between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

The incident occurred yesterday morning and caused disruption to all trains running between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Though the individual luckily survived, they were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Disruption to services began as lines were blocked off just before 8am and reopened around an hour later.

Train operators LNER posted on social media at the time, saying: “It is with sadness to inform (sic) that due to an incident between Newcastle and Edinburgh all lines are blocked.

“Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed.

They went on to say: “LNER works closely with The Samaritans and The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).

“If you or someone close to you has been affected by this incident or any other, there is always someone to talk to.”

They later added: “Emergency services are on the scene and have tended to the person, they have taken them to a place of safety and all lines have now reopened.

“Please check your journey before travel.”

A spokesperson from the British Transport Police said today: “Officers were called to the line close to Acklington Railway Station at 7:42am yesterday following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended and a person has been taken to hospital with injuries which are believed to be life-changing.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service also said today: “We were called at 7:42am on Wednesday 22 January to an incident on the train line in Acklington, Northumberland.

“We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team, a duty officer, specialist paramedic and a rapid response paramedic.

“We were also supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by air.”
