Over £160,000 raised for Rangers fan and dad of three who was tragically killed in Istanbul

by Glasgow Report

A FUNDRAISER for a Rangers-mad dad of three who was killed in Istanbul last week has raised over £160,000 to help his family.

Christopher Potter tragically passed away after being hit by a car in the Be?ikta? area, then reportedly hit again by another vehicle whilst still in the road.

Christopher was in Istanbul to watch his beloved Gers play Fenerbahce in the Europa League, where they stormed to a 3-1 win.

The fundraiser, set up by friend Daryl Mckernan, has reached £166,994 in just five days, with over 4,000 donations and messages of condolence.

The Rangers fan, who hailed from Glasgow, is survived by his wife, daughter, and two sons and was described as “one of life’s genuine good guys”.

His friend Daryl set up a GoFundMe last week after the devastating news broke, saying: “Hi, as everybody is aware Christopher Potter was tragically killed while away watching his beloved Rangers.

“Let’s try and get some money together to help with any costs needed, his funeral or getting him home or just to help his wife and kids.

“Let’s dig deep all donations will be greatly appreciated.”

Among those who donated were Andy Smillie, a die-hard Rangers fan and businessman who gave £10,000, and Rangers players James Tavernier and Jack Butland who donated £500 each.

Rangers paid tribute to Christopher on social media, saying: “We are devastated to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul.

“The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“We are remaining in constant contact with both the Turkish and British authorities over this tragic incident.”

The post received over 11,000 likes and 1,400 comments, with mourners expressing their sympathies for Christopher’s family.

One said: “Rest in peace Potter, one of life’s genuine good guys. Simply the best, you never walk alone.

“Duke Street has lost a legend mate”.

Another replied: “I was so moved to see both teams wearing their armbands, and the messages on Facebook from fans from every club in the country.

“Rest in peace Christopher. Your team did you proud mate, I hope it brought some comfort to those you loved.”

A third commented: “Thoughts and prayers with his friends and family.

“Another local lad gone. No one should go to the football and not come home.”
