Rubbish repurposed – for fun. Unique playground reopens in London

by Glasgow Report
in Lifestyle

An adventure playground that doubles as an art installation has reopened for the summer at the Southbank Centre in London.

Replay is a space built entirely out of waste materials that have been given a new lease of life by the Hull-based Herd Theatre. “We reached out to theatres, events companies, factories and businesses and asked them if they had anything that was headed for the bin or collecting dust on a shelf,” said Ruby Thompson from Herd.

“The response was huge. We were given backdrops from fashion shows like Alexander McQueen, props from TV adverts, fabric from bag manufacturers, hundreds of tubes from a bandage factory, and the actual red carpet from the Bafta Television Awards.”

We reached out to theatres, events companies, factories and businesses and asked them if they had anything that was headed for the bin

Visitors to Replay will also hear a score made from ‘recycled sounds’ – noises made by the waste the team collected – as well as audio from local families, and noises from the Southbank Centre itself, including the sound of a ticket being scanned.

The playground is free to use and will be open until 1 June.
