If the disconnect between Maga voters and Maga politicians had a face, it would be the pained smirk that is always painted across Kevin Hassett’s mug when he’s making a public appearance.
The Director of the National Economic Council regularly shows up on TV to assure the American people that everything is going great with their money.
Unfortunately for Hassett, his latest attempt did not go the way he had hoped.
Listen as Hassett tries to argue that more spending is a good thing, especially when it’s racked up on credit cards.
Hassett on American consumers: “Credit card spending is through the roof. They’re spending more on gasoline, but they’re spending more on everything else too.” pic.twitter.com/zayCSaxhwr

That’s not how it works, Kevin. And everybody in the replies noticed.
1.
Trump’s chief economic advisor is bragging that people are surviving on credit cards right now. https://t.co/WYeyy0hxqZ

2.
The Trump Administration is now CELEBRATING Americans paying more for gas and putting more on their credit cards.
They’re literally bragging about people getting squeezed.
Totally out of touch! https://t.co/mG5RxIysK2

Credit card spending means people are broke and going into debt to survive. That’s hardly a sign of economic health. These people are idiots.

Can someone please smack that smirk off his smug face?

Dear @WhiteHouse: PLEASE KEEP PUTTING KEVIN HASSETT ON TV.
I love how he helps Democratic messaging. It is absolutely true that “credit card spending is through the roof” because gas prices are through the roof and “everything else too.” https://t.co/B58csi44D9
