Glasgow 2026 launches Commonwealth Mile and free live site

by Glasgow Report
in Sports

WITH exactly one week until the start of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, organisers have unveiled a physical distance installation and a schedule of free public events.

A measured “Commonwealth Mile” has been marked along the River Clyde to mark the return of the athletics distance event, while Kelvingrove Park will host a dedicated ‘Game On Live Site’ offering free sports activities and live screenings.

The park events will run throughout the 11 days of the Games, featuring representations from over 20 sports, community-led performances, and appearances from the event mascot, Finnie.

The mile installation stretches from Clyde Place Quay in Tradeston, across the Tradeston footbridge — known locally as the Squiggly Bridge — and west towards the Scottish Event Campus (SEC).

It corresponds to the distance of the men’s and women’s one-mile finals, which are scheduled to take place on 1 August at Scotstoun Stadium.

Funding for the Kelvingrove live site has been provided by the Scottish Government, SportScotland, and Commonwealth Sport. The initiative forms part of the Scottish Government’s wider £20m Summer of Sport campaign to increase sports accessibility across the country.

Local Asian radio network Awaz FM will also be based at the live site during the Games, broadcasting live shows and conducting interviews with athletes and visitors.

Louisa Mahon, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer of Glasgow 2026, said: “With just one week to go until Glasgow 2026 begins, we can’t wait to welcome athletes and visitors from across the Commonwealth to the city.

“Our Commonwealth Mile and the fun-packed offer at our Kelvingrove Park Game On Live Site are brilliant ways to get involved with the Games on top of the 11 days of fantastic sporting action.

“They’re free, inclusive and family-friendly – with lots of hands-on fun at Kelvingrove that everyone can enjoy, no matter their age or ability.”

Martin Reynolds, Deputy Chief Executive of Commonwealth Sport, said: “The Commonwealth Games are about much more than what happens in the venues.

“They are an opportunity to bring communities together, inspire the next generation and create moments that everyone can be part of.

“The Commonwealth Mile and the Game On Live Site will help people experience the excitement of Glasgow 2026 beyond the field of play.”

Forbes Dunlop, SportScotland CEO, added: “The Game On Live Site provides a unique opportunity for people from across Scotland and beyond to come together, take part in free activities, celebrate sporting moments and be inspired by our Scottish athletes.”
