When beauty meets determination: landscape photography award winners named

by Glasgow Report
in World

The winners of this year’s International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition have been announced

A sunrise on the Atacama desert in Chile and an elm tree in a snow storm are among the four winning images that have helped to crown Andrew Mielzynski as International Landscape Photographer of the Year 2024.

Mielzynski, from Canada, was named this week as the overall winner of the contest, which is now in its eleventh year. More than 3,600 images from all over the world were submitted this time around.

Other striking landscapes to be photographed included the Yangykala Canyon in Turkmenistan (pictured above) and the Arita Cone [a conical geological formation] in La Puna Argentina, both by Ignacio Palacios, who is based in Australia and who came in second place. Third place went to Gheorghe Popa of Romania. Entrants were asked to submit at least four shots.

“I don’t have to explain the importance of patience, persistence and determination to a landscape photographer,” said Peter Eastway, chair of the judges.

“The idea that we wander out into the landscape and easily capture images … is simply nonsense. Whether you’re actually out in the landscape or exploring the world through your imagination, great landscape photography requires a great deal of patience – patience for the right season, the right weather and the right light.

“It also takes perseverance because rarely will the season, weather and light work together in ways that inspire us. How often have we visited a location with great hopes, only to have them dashed by inappropriate light? Or perhaps our flight was delayed or our car had a flat tyre? And that’s why to be a successful landscape photographer, you also need determination to see your projects through.”

Read on to find out more about some of the winning shots.
