Popular yoga chain makes plans for fifth studio in Edinburgh

by Glasgow Report
in Health

A YOGA chain in Edinburgh has submitted plans for another studio, which would be their fifth in the city.

Tribe Yoga has locations in Leith, New Town, Quartermile and Stockbridge, and offers a range of classes from beginner sessions to teacher training.

Their proposed new studio would be on Earl Grey Street in Tollcross, in the former Pulp ‘N’ Grind cafe.

The company, which was founded in 2015, also runs Tribe Cycle in two locations, offering spin classes with a nightclub-style lighting system and silent disco headphones.

Tribe Yoga recently submitted a planning application to change the use of the old cafe into an area for restricted yoga and pilates classes.

It is also planning on installing extraction grills, showers, and accessible toilets.

Tribe Yoga has four Edinburgh locations and one in London, and was founded by Marianne Meehan and her business partner James Wilson.

The studios attract thousands of yoga lovers a month, including athletes and dancers, and offer both gentle and intense classes taught by expert teachers.

One class costs £18, and a standard peak-time membership goes for £105 per month which is valid at all studios for all class times, though some types require an added fee.

Its Leith Walk and Stockbridge locations also offer Tribe Cycle, which provides spin classes set to music, with Taylor Swift-themed classes and an upcoming “Pride Ride” on 14 June.

The new Tribe Yoga studio is planned for 12-14 Earl Grey Street, just over half a mile from the Quartermile location.

The property is a category B-listed building that dates back to around 1900 and sits below the Methodist Central Hall.

In 2022, an application was made to change the premises into a restaurant, but this was refused, and the unit has been vacant since then.

In preparation for its application, Tribe contacted the Tollcross Community Council, which provided a supportive written response stating that the studio would be of benefit to the community for its wellness-focused offering tailored to locals rather than tourists.

Tribe intends to restore the shopfront to a “more sympathetic heritage appearance, enhancing the character of the Tollcross Town Centre”.

The applicant goes on: “While it’s not possible to restore lost heritage, the unsightly modern cladding, plastic signage, and metal fascias can be removed and where feasible, we propose to restore original timber features and detailing.”

The space will be made up of a large, open-plan studio visible to the street front and open from 6:30am-9pm, seven days a week.

Tribe Yoga have said that they are hoping to expand to seven studios over the next 12 months, including a potential Tollcross location such as on Earl Grey Street.

They are also looking to open a second London studio soon, which Edinburgh members will be able to use as part of their deal.
