“We can ah kick a ba” – sun safety campaign uses World Cup buzz

by Glasgow Report
in Sports

A VIDEO showcasing Dundee’s diverse communities and creativity will raise awareness for sun safety ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The “We Can Ah Kick a Ba” project features young people saying the iconic Dundonian phrase in the 33 diverse languages spoken in the city.

Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre produced the video in collaboration with the V&A.

The video also features a poem raising awareness of sun safety, which marks the launch of a city-wide campaign coinciding with the tournament.

Primary school pupils in Dundee will receive sun safe Scotland packs as of today, made up of factor 50 suncream and a World Cup “fandana.”

The fandana was the idea of retired NHS surgeon Rodney Mountain, who thought of using the excitement of the World Cup to promote sun safety for children. The design was a collaboration of the V&A and young people from Dundee.

Dr Amy Perkins supports the campaign and the fandana, which is seen as “both a celebration piece for young football fans and as practical sun protection.”

An earlier version of the fandana in scarf form is available to purchase in the V&A’s gift shop.

The release of this video comes on Thursday as the World Cup begins – as well as the opening day of Dundee play festival and the international day of play.

Schools across the city will be showing this video to pupils and taking part in football themed activities.
